Heathrow Expansion Gathers Momentum as Consultation Takes Off

Heathrow Airport have today launched a 10-week consultation offering the public an opportunity to shape Heathrow’s future and how the airport will serve local communities and the UK economy.

Heathrow is seeking views on options to deliver and operate an expanded airport, alongside principles of new airspace design

The Consultation is the latest delivery milestone and comes ahead of a Parliamentary vote in the first half of 2018 on a National Policy Statement for a new north-west runway at Heathrow

Heathrow’s consultation is a major milestone in delivering an expanded airport -  Europe’s largest privately funded infrastructure project, and the best way to keep the UK connected to global growth.   For the next ten weeks, Heathrow will seek views on how to shape its plans so it can deliver the huge opportunities of expansion while keeping to the promises it has made to local communities and meeting strict environmental tests.

Major overhaul for M3 Winchester junction

A major road upgrade that will improve journeys on the M3 and the A34 in Hampshire has been unveiled by Highways England today (Tuesday 9 January).

Junction 9 of the M3, where it meets the A34 near Winchester will be redesigned under the plans to create dedicated free flow lanes which will allow drivers travelling between the M3 and the A34 to avoid using the junction roundabout. The roundabout itself will be redesigned into a new ‘dumbbell’ layout, which will increase capacity, improve safety and make journey times more reliable.

The plans go on show today in a public consultation lasting until 19 February 2018.

Highways England project manager Simon Hewett said:

Junction 9 is a vital interchange between the M3 and A34. With more than 6,000 vehicles using the junction each hour during peak times, it can often become congested, with queues backing up onto the main carriageway.

The proposals we are publishing today will resolve that by separating out loc

EU Funding now available to help turn bright ideas and cutting-edge technology into successful business across the South of England

Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) in collaboration with other LEPs has announced £3m funding opportunities from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to help take forward two of the key recommendations in the Science and Innovation Audit (SIA) for Southern England region – known as Innovation South.

Innovation South stretches from Dorset to Kent and from Berkshire to the Isle of Wight, covering eight counties across southern England, with a total economic output of £225.3 billion, accounting for 13.7% of UK’s economic output.

The two ERDF calls (Knowledge-to-Market Accelerator and Quantum Supply Chain Initiative) are seeking proposals to ensu

World’s first training Centre for Quantum Biology established at the University of Surrey with £1m support from the Leverhulme Trust

The University of Surrey has been awarded £1million from the prestigious Leverhulme Trust to establish the world’s first doctoral training centre for quantum biology.

The Centre, which will be headed by Professors Johnjoe McFadden and Jim Al-Khalili, will train a new generation of scientists with the skills needed to study and even exploit the quantum underpinnings of life from efficient energy transport in photosynthesis to the quantum-guided navigational skills of Christmas robins.

Up to seven PhD students will be recruited each year for the next three years who will engage in a three-year interdisciplinary training and research programme. Students will work on projects from photosynthesis to nanotechnology.

High speed broadband to become a legal right

Universal Service Obligation will deliver high speed broadband across the UK

The Government has confirmed that universal high speed broadband will be delivered by a regulatory Universal Service Obligation (USO), giving everyone in the UK access to speeds of at least 10 Mbps by 2020.

This is the speed that Ofcom, the independent regulator, says is needed to meet the requirements of an average family. After careful consideration the government has decided that regulation is the best way of making sure everyone in the UK can get a decent broadband connection of at least 10 Mbps as soon as possible.

Following the creation of new powers when the Government passed the Digital Economy Act 2017, we launched our consultation on the design of the regulatory USO in the summer. The Government will now set out the design for a legal right to high speed broadband in secondary legislation early next year, alongside our detailed response to the consultation.

Life Stream Healthcare Secures Expansion Loan

A New Forest medical communication solutions company has received funding from the Enterprise M3 Expansion Loan Scheme. The funds will assist the company in taking advantage of the increased opportunities it faces following the use of its products across a number of NHS facilities.

Life Stream Healthcare was introduced to The FSE Group by Rosemary Penn-Newman at FPN Ltd.  The company was established by John Cooper in 2007 who, whilst running a video conferencing business, was approached to develop a solution that could send live images from one hospital to another. Existing systems could not transmit in high enough definition for diagnostic purposes and were generally not fit for purpose.

John developed the Life Stream products to meet the specific and challenging needs of its target market.  Providing a unique medical communications system, comprising both hardware and software, Life Stream allows real time interaction between consultants and other healthcare p

The agreement will see Enterprise M3 and Mobile UK working together to keep the region at the forefront of digital innovation, and ensure that local businesses and consumers are able to benefit from a strong economy.

The partnership will also seek to collaborate with key stakeholders in industry and politics in order to promote practical steps towards improving the deployment of crucial mobile infrastructure. Outcomes from the partnership will help to inform revisions to Enterprise M3’s strategic economic plan.

The innovative new partnership was announced at a high-level round-table event at the 5G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey, jointly hosted by Enterprise M3 and Mobile UK, which saw a Memorandum of Understanding signed in front of the UK’s mobile network operator
