Have your say on transport plans to improve travel in Basingstoke

A transport strategy that will support economic growth opportunities in Basingstoke, and build on Enterprise M3 LEP's £35m investment in the town, has been released for consultation. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, along with Hampshire County Council, have jointly published the draft strategy which is open to comments until Monday, 28 January 2019 by clicking here. The strategy is supported by the expertise of Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) which has invested up to £36m in Basingstoke's transport infrastructure to support capacity, protect existing jobs and unlock future employment and growth opportunities. This includes highway capacity improvements and support for the Manydown Housing Infrastructure Fund bid which will support the western corridor of the transport strategy. Kevin Travers, Enterprise M3's Head of Transport, said: "Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership is pleased the consultation on Basingstoke Transport Strategy is taking place to help support the future development of the town.  The approach proposed offers a real opportunity to build on the significant investment of over £35m in the Local Enterprise Partnership has already made in transport infrastructure in Basingstoke, which is key to protecting existing job and unlocking future employment and growth opportunities.  The Transport Strategy will also complement our emerging Local Industrial Strategy which will seek to transform the local economies with the regeneration of Basingstoke town centre." Measures in the draft transport strategy include: • improving access to and within the town centre• creating new developments which are well-planned and integrated with the existing transport network• providing a step change in the quality of local public transport• developing high quality priority strategic walking and cycling corridors• managing journey times and reliability• maintaining strong strategic transport connections• forward planning of the transport network to meet future needs Councillor Rob Humby, Executive Member for Environment and Transport at Hampshire County Council, said: "We're working with colleagues at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council on a draft transport strategy to prioritise what needs to be done to improve how people travel through and within Basingstoke both now, and as future ambitious development plans come to fruition, for example at Manydown, in the town centre and Basing View.  As the town grows and evolves, it's important that the right travel and transport infrastructure is put in place so that Basingstoke can continue to prosper and be an attractive and healthy place where people live, work and visit." Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Planning and Infrastructure Cllr Mark Ruffell said: "'This joint strategy between the borough council and county council sets out our combined ambition for the future. We hope that our residents will respond to this consultation. We need to know their views, whether in support or suggesting improvement. Transport plays such an important role in all our lives and this strategy, when finalised, will underpin the decisions made by both councils in the future." To comment on the draft transport strategy for Basingstoke, go to www.hants.gov.uk/basingstoketransportstrategy.  Feedback will be incorporated into the final draft strategy to be approved by both Hampshire County Council and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to inform future planning and infrastructure decisions in Basingstoke.
